Statement of Faith

What We Believe at Rogersville Baptist Temple

The writings of the Old and New Testaments are the holy, perfect, completed, and actual Word of God. Every word is verbally inspired and completely without error as originally given by God. The Bible is altogether sufficient as our only infallible and authoritative rule of faith and practice. There are no new revelations from God today. Everything that disagrees with the Bible is a falsehood from Satan.

Isaiah 8:20 · 2 Timothy 3:16-17 · 1 Thessalonians 5:21

There is one Triune God who is personal, spirit, and sovereign. God is perfect, infinite, eternal, holy, loving, wise, and all-powerful. He is absolutely separate from and above the world as its Creator, yet everywhere present as the Upholder of all things. God is self-existent and self-revealing in three distinct persons: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, each having a distinct ministry in relation to His creation and people.

John 4:24 · Psalm 83:18 · Exodus 15:11 · Mark 12:30 · Matthew 28:19 · John 10:30 · Ephesians 2:18

The Lord Jesus Christ is the second Person of the Triune God. He is the eternal Word and the Only Begotten Son of God. Without any change in His divine Person, Jesus became man by the miracle of the virgin birth, continuing forever as both true God and true man. As man, He was tempted in all points as we are, yet without sin. As the perfect Lamb of God, He gave Himself in bodily death upon the cross, becoming the sin of the world and suffering its full penalty in our stead. He arose bodily from the grave, conquered death, and was glorified. As our great High Priest, Jesus ascended into Heaven and appears before God as the believer's Advocate and Intercessor.

John 1:1-2, 14 · Isaiah 7:14 · Hebrews 4:14-16 · John 10:17-18 · 1 Corinthians 15:3-4

The Holy Spirit is the third Person of the Trinity and the divine Agent in nature, revelation, and redemption. He convicts the world regarding sin, righteousness, and judgment. The Holy Spirit regenerates, indwells, baptizes, seals, and anoints all who become children of God through Jesus Christ. He further empowers, guides, teaches, sanctifies, and fills believers who daily surrender to Him.

John 14:16-18, 26 · John 15:26 · John 16:7-15 · Romans 8:16 · Ephesians 4:30 · 1 John 4:13

All things were created by God. God took six literal 24-hour days to create everything described in Genesis chapter one. Man is the direct creation of God, made in God's image and likeness. All animal and plant life was created by God under His established law that they would only bring forth after their kind. Evolution is a lie from Satan.

Genesis 1:1-31 · Exodus 20:11 · John 1:3

All men and women are by nature and choice sinful and lost. By personal disobedience to the revealed will of God, man became a sinful creature and the father of a fallen race that is universally sinful in both nature and practice. Man is alienated from the life and family of God and stands under His righteous judgment and wrath. Man has within himself no possible means of salvation.

Genesis 3:6-24 · Romans 3:23 · Romans 5:12, 17-19 · Romans 6:23

Salvation by grace through faith in Jesus Christ, our sinless sacrifice, is the only way to be saved. Salvation is the free gift of God. It is neither merited nor secured in part or in whole by any virtue or work of man. Salvation is only received by personal faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, His sacrificial death, and His bodily resurrection. Through Jesus Christ, all true believers have as a present possession the gift of eternal life, a perfect righteousness, sonship in the family of God, deliverance and security from all condemnation, every spiritual resource needed for life and godliness, and the divine guarantee that they shall never perish. Apart from Jesus Christ there is no possible salvation.

John 16 · John 14:6 · Ephesians 2:8-10 · Titus 3:5-7 · Romans 10:9-10, 13 · 2 Peter 3:9

Righteous living and godly works are not a means of salvation in any sense, but their proper evidence and fruit. Christians should obey the Word of the Lord, seek the things which are above, walk as Jesus walked, and accept the solemn responsibility of bearing the Gospel to a lost world. A victorious and fruitful Christian life is possible only for those who, in gratitude for the infinite and undeserved mercies of God, have presented themselves completely to Jesus Christ.

Ephesians 2:10 · Titus 2:11-14 · Hebrews 12:1-2 · Romans 8:1-2

Satan was originally created a holy and perfect being but through pride and wicked ambition rebelled against God. He became utterly depraved in character, the great adversary of God and His people, the leader of all other evil angels and spirits, and the deceiver and god of the present world. Though Satan has vast powers, they are strictly limited by the permissive will of God, who overrules all of Satan's wicked devices for good. Satan was defeated and judged at the cross and his final doom is certain. Believers are able to resist and overcome Satan only in the armor of God, by the blood of Jesus, and through the power of the Holy Spirit.

Ezekiel 28:11-19 · Isaiah 14:12-17 · 1 Peter 5:8-9 · Job 1:7 · 2 Corinthians 11:14 · 2 Corinthians 4:3-4

The Second Coming of Jesus Christ, returning from Heaven, will be personal, visible, and glorious. It is the blessed hope for which believers should constantly watch and pray, the time being unrevealed but always imminent. When Jesus returns, He will first by resurrection of the dead and translation of the living remove from the earth His waiting Church. Then the righteous judgments of God will pour out upon the unbelieving world. Afterwards Jesus Christ will descend with His Church and establish His glorious and literal kingdom over all the nations for a thousand years.

John 14:1-3 · 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18 · Acts 1:11 · Revelation 1:7

Bodily resurrection, God's judgment, and eternal life or eternal punishment will happen to every man and woman. After death, the spirits of the saved go immediately to be with Jesus Christ in Heaven. The works of the saved will be brought before the Judgment Seat of Christ for the determination of rewards. The saved will then live forever serving and worshiping the Lamb of God. After death, the spirits of the lost descend immediately into Hades where they are kept under punishment until the final day of judgment. At that time their bodies will be raised and at the Great White Throne of Judgment they will be condemned and cast into Hell, the place of final and everlasting punishment.

1 Corinthians 15:51-57 · Revelation 20:11-15

The priesthood of all believers is possible through our Great High Priest, Jesus Christ. Every born again person has direct access into God's presence without the need of a human priest. All believers have the right and responsibility to personally study and interpret the Bible, guided by the Holy Spirit.

Revelation 1:5-6 · Revelation 5:10 · Revelation 20:6 · 1 Peter 2:5, 9

The only Head of the Body of Christ is our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. The Holy Spirit immediately baptizes all true believers, at the moment of salvation, into the Body of Christ. All members of this one spiritual body are commanded to assemble and identify themselves in a local church.

Matthew 16:18 · Ephesians 1:22-23

The importance of the local church is paramount in God's eyes. A New Testament church is a local assembly of born again baptized believers, united to practice New Testament ordinances, to meet together for worship, prayer, fellowship, teaching, and a united testimony, and to actively engage in carrying out the Great Commission.

Each New Testament church is free to govern itself without ecclesiastical interference and should cooperate with other New Testament churches as the Holy Spirit leads. Each local church is directly accountable to God.

Ephesians 2:19-22 · Acts 2:42-47 · Hebrews 13:7, 17

Two ordinances are given to the local church: Baptism and the Lord's Supper.

Baptism is by full immersion of believers, representing the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

The Lord's Supper is the partaking of the bread and cup by the believer as a continuing memorial of the broken body and shed blood of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Romans 6:4 · Acts 2:41-42 · 1 Corinthians 11:23-34
